A Compass Center Initiative

In a world where the youngest among us are not immune to the harsh realities of trauma, the Little Navigators Program serves as a beacon of hope and healing. Developed by The Compass Center in collaboration with EmBe and other community partners, this groundbreaking initiative aims to prevent and treat trauma in preschool-age children right where they spend most of their day—in childcare settings. In addition, we assess the unique needs and barriers facing children and their families and develop targeted plans to ensure the success of both the child and the community.

Guiding Young Lives Towards Healing and Resilience

Breaking Down Barriers

We understand that life’s challenges don’t wait for convenient times. That’s why in March of 2022, we launched this program to station therapists directly in childcare centers across the greater Sioux Falls area, providing programming that is specially tailored to children’s needs. This eliminates the logistical hurdles families often face when seeking mental health support, making it easier for children and their families to access the help they need, when they need it. Our team, including childcare staff and therapists, are trained to recognize risk factors in children and equip them with skills to prevent violence and disrupt harmful social norms.

The Urgency of Now

South Dakota faces a critical need for such services. Over 40% of those experiencing sexual violence in the state are under the age of 18. The Little Navigators Program is designed to ensure that those most vulnerable receive the resources and support they require. Our healing and prevention activities, drawn from diverse cultures and values, provide a holistic approach to fostering social and emotional skills in a developmentally appropriate manner.

Transformative Impact

Thanks to generous grants from the City of Sioux Falls and The Bush Foundation, we’re not just launching a program; we’re igniting a movement. One that aims to transform the lives of children, families, and childcare providers by building a robust network of support that facilitates healing and preventative factors.
