The Compass Center Announces Leadership Transition

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 8, 2025

SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Compass Center today announced that Executive Director Michelle Trent will be transitioning from her role this spring. Trent’s dedication to the organization spans over 11 years, during which she has held roles as Counselor, Assistant and Clinical Director, and most recently as Executive Director since October 2020.

“Michelle’s journey from counselor to executive leadership has been remarkable,” said Chris Kappen, Board President. “Her deep understanding of trauma-informed care, combined with her vision for expanding services, has helped The Compass Center flourish. During her tenure, we’ve strengthened our community partnerships, enhanced our crisis response capabilities, and remained steadfast in our commitment to those we serve. Michelle’s vision for our crisis care model, which just launched on May 5, exemplifies her forward-thinking approach to survivor services.”

To ensure continuity of services and organizational stability during this transition, The Compass Center’s Board of Directors has engaged Anne Rieck McFarland to serve as a Senior Advisor and to assist with the executive search process. Sydney Bartunek, Chief Development and Communications Officer, will serve as the primary liaison for staff and community partners throughout this period.

“It has been my sincere honor to serve this organization and our community,” said Trent. “I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together, and I have complete confidence in our team’s ability to continue this vital work with the same passion and commitment.”

The Compass Center will host a community celebration honoring Trent’s contributions in June. Details will be announced in the coming weeks.

The organization’s services remain uninterrupted, including crisis care services through their Adult Services and Youth & Family Services teams. The Board of Directors has initiated an executive search process and will provide updates as the search progresses.
